Spleen
Spleen :-
- Spleen is a dark purplish gland lying on the left of abdomen
- Spleen is mesodermal In origin
- Spleen is covered by a capsule & contain stroma
- Within. Stroma , spleen tissue is differentiated into white
pulp & red pulp
- White pulp is lymphoid tissue around arteries containing
lymphocytes and splenic nodules or marphigian corpusles
- Red pulp consists of venous sinuses with RBCs and splenic or Billroth’s cords
- Spleen serves as a sort of blood bank, the sinuses of spleen
act as “reservoir of blood”
- When a patient is affected by malaria , enlargement of
spleen occur , due to massive increase in phagocytic cell
- In malaria infection, enlarged spleen secretes lysolecithin that destroys the RBCs
- The surgical removal of spleen is called “Splenectomy”
- Spleen Is located close to the alimentary canal , but has
nothing to do with digestive system
