Ecological Equivalent

Ecological equivalent :-
Definition :-
Different organism occupying the same or similar ecological niche in different geographical region are called equivalent
Example :-
1. Grassland ecosystems are dominated by grasses as the produces. But the species of grasses in temperate, semi arid parts of Australia are largely different from those of a similar climatic are of north America, but they all are basically primary products
2. The kangaroo of Australia are ecologically equivalent to the bison and pronghorn antelope of north America
3. The mountain goat found at high altitude in mountain areas of north America in an ecological equivalent of Ibex commonly found in Alps of southern Europe
4. The mountain of Lion of north America feeds on deer, whereas the African lion feeds on antelopes of wild beasts
5. Owls are found in wooded areas while cats are doing
Found near human habitations but both Feed on shrews and mice
6. The artic fox and the African jackal are ecological equivalent of each other. These act as scavengers and also feed on eggs of birds. Artic birds feeds upon the remains of seals killed by polar bears in winter while in summer it feeds upon the eggs of quillent bird. The African jackal takes the eggs of ostrich and the remains of zebra killed by the lion
