COVERING AND LINING EPITHELIUM
COVERING AND LINING EPITHELIUM
- Covering and lining epithelium are classified on the basis of arrangement of layers, cell shapes
and function
- 1.
Simple epithelium :- cell of the tissue are
arranged in a single layer
- 2.
Stratified epithelium :- cell are stacked in
several layers
- 3.
Pseudostratified epithelium :- cells are
arrangement in a single layer , but some of the basal cells do not reach the
surface. Pseudostratified epithelium is ciliated and contain many goblet cells
- 4.
Squamous epithelium :- cells are flattened
.scale like and attached to each other like a mosaic
- 5.
Cuboidal epithelium :- cell are usually
cube-shaped in cross-section,sometimes appear as hexagon
- 6.
Columnar epithelium:- cells are tall and cylindrical
, appearing as rectangular set on end
- 7.
Transitional epithelium :- Cells have a combination
of shapes, found where there is a great degree of distension or expansion in the
body
- 8.
Neurosensory epithelium :- cells are modified
colunmnar with sensory hairs at their free ends and are connected with nerve
fibres
- 9.
Pigmented epithelium :- Cells containing
pigements
- 10.
Germinal epithelium
:- Specialized cuboidal cells capable of producing gametes as found in gonads. Germinal
epithelium produces gametes e.g = Ova and sperms
